Tips For Picking Out Home Finishes
I’m not gonna lie, I had a hard time when we were picking out our finishes. “Finishes” are basically all of the design choices you make in your house - paint colors, light fixtures, countertops, hardware, faucets, etc. Depending on how customizable your home is while you’re building you may have to make decisions on just a handful of items, or hundreds of things.
It can be overwhelming when you have so many decisions to make and so many options to choose from. Here’s my advice for how to make choosing your home finishes a little simpler.

Our New Kitchen Runner + Our Kitchen Details
I finally got around to ordering a runner for our kitchen - we needed something to tie together all of the different things we had going on in there and I really wanted to make the blue cabinets pop, because sometimes they can tend to pull more gray. I really wanted a vintage Persian rug but that was definitely not in our budget right now + with two dogs it seemed like a disaster waiting to happen. It took a long time for me to find one I liked but finally saw this one on Wayfair and decided to give it a go.

My Magnolia Home Inspired Kitchen Hutch
When I was picking our furniture for this home, I was on a pretty tight budget - only the most necessary purchases first. One of the rooms I was most excited about was our dining area. One of the first few purchases I made for the house were are reclaimed wood table and Scandinavian/Farmhouse inspired chairs. I was starry-eyed over this piece from Magnolia Home, but even though I knew it would look PERFECT in the room, it just wasn’t something I was willing to fork up the money for. I knew the room was going to feel empty without a buffet or hutch (plus we needed the storage a piece of furniture like that could offer) so I started looking for something that could work for a fraction of the budget.

The Inspiration For Our Little Eclectic Home
When we set out to build I knew two things 1) I wanted something different 2) I wanted something that didn’t necessarily look NEW.
So off to Pinterest I went! Somehow I stumbled across James Farmer’s The Farmdale Cottage and I thought…

How We Decided On Our Home Plans
Coming up with the plans for our home was probably one of the most fun parts of the building process. It was also the most stressful with so much to think about
We had a few guidelines to start with before we really began looking at plans.
